You have probably heard of the Amazon Cart “999 Cart Trick” that can be used in qualifying sales of a potential competitor. It is where you add the product you are interested in to your shopping cart, then select a quantity of 10+ items, and put in a quantity of 999 items in the cart.
If there are less than 999 units of the product available, you will get a message showing you the actual quantity of units available from that seller. By tracking the quantity available over several days or weeks, you can get a good idea of how many units your potential competition is selling per day. Or at least that is how it is supposed to work. This is a tool that you can use on your potential competitors when doing product research. Unfortunately, your competition can use this trick on you also!
One way to protect yourself against the “999 Cart Trick” is to limit the number of units that any one buyer can purchase from you at a time. When you are adding your product listing, there is an option where you can limit the quantity that can be purchased at one time. So if you think that no one will buy more than 10 (25, 50, 100, etc…) units from you at one time, you can set your buy limit to 10, for example. When someone adds your product to their cart and then tries to increase the quantity to more than 10 intending to see how many units you have available, they will be limited to 10 units and they will not be able to see the actual quantity of units you have in stock by using the “999 Cart Trick” ( unless you have less than 10 available, of course).
